‘American Idiot’ to open on Broadway April 20 at St. James Theatre

Berkeley pride hits the Big Apple again. This time it’s the hugely successful American Idiot musical—based on the smash Green Day album of the same name—which, according to a post on Broadwayworld.com will open on Broadway, April 20, at the St. James Theatre.
That finally the answers the when and where. Now all we need to know is who. The cast is to expected to be announced shortly, although I’m quite sure John Gallagher Jr. will take the lead. The recently re-recorded version of Green Day’s 21 Guns features him along with the Berkeley Rep cast of the production.
“Experiencing American Idiot on stage in Berkeley was incredible,” says Billie Joe Armstrong. “We have really enjoyed working with Michael, Steven, Tom and the cast. The energy and chemistry of the group is contagious. Michael Mayer was able to bring life to the characters of American Idiot and Tom Kitt’s musical arrangements are breathtaking. We’re so proud that the show is coming to Broadway!”
American Idiot played last year at Berkeley Rep to sell outs, and was extended multiple times. To say it was the hottest theater story of 2009 is perhaps an understatement.
