Arrington is an investor in tech, isn't it more likely he's working for his industry in an effort to avoid government regulating it? When you say lots of first hand interviews etc, I read this as a PR campaign orchestrated by the tech world of which Arrington is part because it realises it's looking like government will step in to replace self regulation. I don't play their games, but I have lots of Facebook friends that do and they seem to have come up with a way to make money off of Facebook in a popular and fun way. This is the first time I've heard that they could be harvesting personal information or scamming in some way, so I'm glad I'm not a player. Still, I give props to Zynga for figuring out how to make money on Facebook. A lot of folks are trying to do the same with Twitter and I still haven't seen anyone do it successfully. Re: Mainstream media, I think that evolution will prove itself here as the large news companies who refuse to have a presence with new forms of media/social networking will eventually die off.
