Water like Glass

May’s Monthly Kayak Moment

Yesterday Sharon and I decided to go out on our kayaks even earlier then usual. We were on the water by 6am. We just paddled straight out past the rock and sat. The water was like glass.

We began to see what looked like tiny fins moving about the surface of the water…were they miniature sharks or dolphins or???….we soon found out when the first manta ray jumped straight up totally out of the water and then crashed down. We must have been seeing the tips of their folded “wings”. They weren’t the huge rays, probably more like 3 or 4 feet across. Soon there were tons of them..some jumping and then flapping their “wings” and then crashing down. It was an amazing sight.

At one point we saw a school of flying fish making speedy tracks  away from the mantas. I don’t know what manta rays eat…Wiki has 2 conflicting answers…maybe you know…but the fish seemed interested in leaving that area in a hurry. It made for a great scene.

You never know what you’ll find in the early morning on the Sea of Cortez.

Today we went out with Ariel, Peter and Charlie. The water was totally still and meditative, which was another kind of wonderful. Ariel and I stayed out a half hour longer and we did get to see a manta ray jump before we came in. Then, when we were very close to shore, a school of small flying fish skimmed across the water right in front of our kayaks. Another wonderful kayak moment on the Sea of Cortez.

Addendum: Today, May 9, we slept in but Nancy and Del went out around 6:25 and the saw hundreds of dolphins out towards Carmen island. They were close enough so they could hear them splashing into the water. They watched them for 25 minutes swimming in a line north and south along the island. Nancy said she also saw the telltale pairs of manta ray “wings” swimming around their kayaks but didn’t see them jump. What magic!

We really enjoy your kayaking stories and pictures. They have brightened up many of our “daily grind” days.
“Calgon take me away” to the Sea of Cortez in a kayak right now kind of thing.
.Can’t wait to be there on 19th May.

      Hi Kate and Cliff,
It is a sunny and hot Sunday afternoon. We are hanging out in our home. Sun entry management and the fans are keeping our place cool and breezy. The birds are singing and visiting our fountain. I just finished another No 1 Ladies Detective book. Friends are coming over later for dinner and to watch some videos…one a slideshow/video of our trip to Coronado on our friends’ boat and the other a DVD that I recorded from TV before we left called Extreme Ice. It’s about an expedition to monitor the melting glaciers and is supposed to have stunning images. Our latest favorite thing to do, besides kayaking, is going swimming in one of the pools (we’ve been going to the hotel pool) at sunset. It’s refreshing and quiet and beautiful under the stars. You are going to be 2 happy puppies on Tuesday afternoon. Come by 203 and say hi if you are in the neighborhood. Jane and Sharon
