A Baja ice cream oasis in downtown Loreto at La Michoacana
31 flavors. Are you kidding? It seems like the family-run La Michoacana has 31,000. Or slightly less. Regardless, watch Orlando here rhyme off some of the flavors from the top of his head. Impressive. This is definitely one of our favorite stops each visit, sometimes multiple times on the same day. How can you go wrong for a dollar, especially when everything is freshly made in-house.
If you’ve ever visited Loreto, chances are you’ve been to Michoacana. If you haven’t it’s a must.
As usual if you’re interested in my behind the scenes comments (including a soundtrack disclaimer), read on, otherwise enjoy ice cream nirvana, and thanks to Orlando and the always friendly staff.
First: soundtrack warning! I have a lack of authentic royalty free Baja/Mexican music on my computer. So I now need to dig through my old 80s stuff and the results are going to get worse, before they get better. Synth keyboards, drum machines. Everything but the 80s hair. I probably could not find more ill-fitting music to this video. So if you have any suggestions, I’m all ears…
I like the way Loni holds the Popsicle throughout, even using it to point occasionally. And when she was not on camera during the interview she continued to eat away. Yes the stuff at Michoacana is addictive.
Also, one of my favorite off-the-cuff Loni quotes, near end: “Water. Mother nature’s greatest invention.”
And how about “cucumber with chili” as one of the flavors. Has anyone dared to try that? Me, I stick with the basics like chocolate chip, cookies and cream. Yes, I know, how pedestrian.

What we have done when staying in a casa, rather than the Inn, is at the end of a shopping trip to town, stock up on a variety of popsicles to keep in the freezer for treats/deserts “at home”. I had one with Membrillo (quince) which is very good.
A suggestion for Orlando to serve the gringos & locals, is to put labels in English & Spanish to identify the flavors available.

I want to put in a word for people who don’t eat dairy and often feel deprived at ice cream stores. All of the large popsicles in the left freezer are sin crema, without dairy. I have been coming to Michoacana almost every day of every trip we have made to Loreto and, like Loni, I am hung up on one popsicle….mine is coco sin crema, coconut without milk. It is rich and creamy with chewy bites of coconut all through it. It never disappoints and I never tire of it. Sharon, who loves to eat anything with dairy, also loves the coco sin crema, although now she is dreaming of the strawberry and cream popsicle. We’ll probably be heading to Michoacana straight from the airport in April.
One other thing, there are Michoacana’s in other parts of Baja…I tried a coco sin crema in one and was very disappointed it was quite watery, which is to emphasize that this is not only a great ice cream store in Loreto, it’s the best in all of Baja. And before you accuse me of hyperbole, let me say that my opinion was confirmed by Jamie, who has travelled in many parts of Mexico.
Chuck and I also head for Michoacana after a day of shopping or after dinner…I love the coconut con crema….Big chunks of coconut. Chuck’s favorite is strawberry con crema..I probably should go sin crema, but HEY!!!
Great interview. We arrive in Loreto on Friday and the ice cream store is always one of our favorite stops.
I also tend to get the same thing over and over.. but no I’m on a mission for the oreo ice cream!!
